The following can be used as a guide for an oral health presentations presented by Dallas County Dental Society Foundation volunteers. Your guidance and motivation can help children and adults develop effective oral health care habits that can last a lifetime. 

Elementary School (Ages 5-10)

Notes Pages includes a topic, suggestion for script and questions that can be asked for each topic if script isn’t used.

When describing how to brush teeth properly, be sure to include these steps recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA):

  • Brush twice a day: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush for at least two minutes each time.

  • Use fluoride toothpaste: Make sure to use an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste for effective cleaning. (size of a pea for children)

  • Technique: Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use gentle circular motions to clean the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of your teeth.

  • Don't forget your tongue: Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.

  • Replace your toothbrush: Change your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
